The Maniototo

The Maniototo is a stunning part of the NZ South Island, it's one of those places where you feel the NZ history. It's now sheep farm land,it's harsh, dry climate, ranging from over 30°C in mid-summer to -15°C in mid-winter so it's a hardy place. The gold rush hit there in the early days, it's been photographed, painted and talked about for many years, and I can understand why, I love the place and really need to go back and do more!

I moved to New Zealand in 2003 and fell in love with the place almost immediately. It reminds me a lot of Scotland, especially the further south you go in the country. I've spent pretty much all of the time in the south island being based in Christchurch makes it nice & simple, but I do get to a few other places and there are images captured from all over NZ.

Tekapo (NZ)

Tekapo is probably my favourite place in New Zealand so far, it's just got the stunning magical feeling to it, it's still largely untouched in terms of the gift stores and that sort of stuff and the landscapes and waters around there are stunning. It's also a place where they are about to make the sky a world heritage sky reserve! It's hard to explain the feelings that the place gives to me, it was one of the places I visited with mum & dad when they where here and they loved it, dad especially, it's different every time you visit it and each time it reveals one more little part of it's self, perhaps it's why it has it's very own category.

Edinburgh being the capital of Scotland has a very proud heritage and lots of wonderful historical places and fantastic buildings ( I love buildings!) Again most of these images are ones captured on visits back home to Scotland, even though I spent 10 years living in Dunfermline just across the Forth River from Edinburgh and I had many great nights out there, I never got the chance to explore it with a camera properly, maybe next time I head home...

I grew up in Glasgow and spent the first 25 years of my life there and I know it's had a massive effect on my life and the way I think & increasingly look at things, even if I don't realise it at the time. I regret not takign up photography before moving to NZ and so as a result most of these images are those I've captured on return visits to see the family, in part in a bid to have images to show friends & loved ones in NZ where I came from but also to let me show off Glasgow a bit, it's a fabulous city after all.

Other places, it could be anywhere and it kind of is. I've been lucky to get to see a bit of the world with my jobs but only since 2004 have I made sure I've always got a camera with me. These images then are from all around the world and give a glimpse of places I've been, more to come I'm sure.

A few months ago I took a trip to Tekapo with some friends in a photo club I help to run. We chose Tekapo because of how much many of us love the place. It's hard to explain the place really and why it's so magical. I've been there a number of times and have taken away from there probably 3 or 4 of my all time favourite images, the one here being a good example of one of those.
